Southern Vipers crowned inaugural Kia Super League Champions

The Southern Vipers were last night crowned the Kia Super League Champions having beat the Western Storm in the final at Chelmsford by seven-wickets.

It was an opening stand of 78 between captain Charlotte Edwards (24) and New Zealand all-rounder Suzie Bates (52) which saw the Vipers close in on the target of 140 set by the Western Storm.

It wasn't plain sailing for the Vipers however as both openers departed in quick succession only to see the run chase expertly picked up by experienced internationals Sara McGlashan and Lydia Greenway. Their fourth-wicket stand of 39 was enough to see the Vipers home with seven balls remaining.

Having earlier won the toss, Vipers Captain Charlotte Edwards elected to field with the Storm opening up with player of the tournament Stafanie Taylor (35) and New Zealand wicketkeeper Rachel Priest (57).  The Storm started brightly with an opening stand of 74 inside 11 overs until Arran Brindle took the key wickets of Stefanie Taylor who was caught at mid-off.

Having reached 57 in just 55 balls, Priest was unable to kick on and fell to Bates whilst Brindle continued to impress with the ball, having Knight caught at square leg.

A late flurry of runs from Wilson and Hennessy saw Western Storm reach 140-5 but it wasn't to be enough on the day as the Vipers claimed the inaugural title.

Having been announced as the official clothing supplier to the Southern Vipers earlier in the year, Founder and Managing Director of Serious Cricket Neil Rider said:

"We're absolutely delighted with the result of the tournament. We've been following all the matches both home and away and it's fair to say that the best team has won. It's been fantastic working with the squad over the past few months and it's even sweeter when the champions are wearing your kit. We all send our congratulations to the girls and the staff and look forward to the defence of the title next year."
